Frequently asked questions
Afraid of committing to a lesson package or program?
That's normal!
ShiftPoint will work with you to add or even reduce the number of lessons to fit your skill level.
ShiftPoint has designed its curriculum to fit the needs of the majority of our students. These are general guidelines that help structure our lessons and aid our customers in finding a good starting and ending point.
Although these serve as a general guideline, they are not set in stone.
We serve a variety of students of all ages and all skill levels; therefore, our curriculum varies from student to student.
Our end goal is to get you comfortable and confident.
SHIFTPOINT recognizes that manual driving is no longer be common, but that's the best part! You have the opportunity to learn what is now considered a niche skill!
Because manual driving requires timing and coordination, drivers tend to:
Pay more attention to speed
Anticipate traffic better
Listen to the engine
Stay engaged with the road
Develop smoother acceleration and braking habits
Many people say learning manual made them a more confident driver in any car.
Manual drivers naturally learn:
How transmissions work
What the clutch does
How power transfers to the wheels
What engine sounds mean
ShiftPoint students can challenge their knowledge at our Essentials Workshop.
Learning manual is challenging at first, and that’s part of the benefit.
Students often feel:
Proud once they get it
More independent
Less intimidated by driving
It’s a real confidence milestone
It's still fun! This is especially true for:
Car enthusiasts
Younger drivers
People buying their first manual car
Manual driving feels more engaging and intentional.
Manual is still common in:
Rental cars overseas
Older vehicles
Enthusiast cars
Some trucks and fleet vehicles (Job Opportunities)
Knowing manual means you’re rarely limited by what you can drive.
Additionally:
Car selection (manual cars typically tend to be $2,000-$5,000 cheaper than their automatic counterparts)
It’s not about rejecting modern cars—it’s about allowing students to become safer and better drivers overall.

Learning from someone who owns a manual car might seem easier but it’s not always the safest or most effective option.
No dual controls. If something goes wrong, there’s no instructor brake or clutch to prevent a mistake.
Higher stress for both people. Friends and family can get frustrated. That pressure makes learning harder.
Risk to their vehicle. Clutch wear, stalling, or sudden stops can cause unnecessary strain on a personal car.
No structured teaching method. Most people teach from habit, not a step-by-step system.
Limited real-world practice. You may only learn in one parking lot instead of progressing to hills, traffic, and real driving scenarios.
With professional instruction, you get:
A dual-control training vehicle
Calm, structured coaching
A clear progression plan
A safer learning environment
Faster confidence-building
Learning manual doesn’t have to be stressful, it can be safe, smooth, and actually enjoyable with ShiftPoint's Manual Driving Lessons!
