ShiftPoint: Inspiring Change in Arizona's Drivers

ShiftPoint, at its roots, is a business that wants to inspire change.

We aim to create a shifting point in our students' lives by encouraging them to take an interest in their cars. Through learning skills that are often overlooked, ShiftPoint offers a unique opportunity. After attending a workshop, students can join our Vehicle Essentials Workshop free of charge. We encourage our students to come back and learn more!

Vehicle Essentials Workshop Overview

Within our Vehicle Essentials Workshop, we cover three main topics: mechanics, maintenance, and roadside safety.

Mechanics: Understanding Your Vehicle

In the mechanics portion, we dive into car basics. Students learn about the four stages of a four-stroke engine and how power is transferred throughout the car via the drivetrain. This foundational knowledge is crucial for every driver.

Maintenance: Keeping Your Car in Shape

Next, we focus on maintenance. Here, students discover how to change a car's oil, check and change brake pads, inspect tire tread, read voltage on the battery, and check fluids. This knowledge is essential for prolonging the life of their vehicles.

Roadside Safety: Staying Prepared

Finally, our roadside safety portion teaches students what to do when their car breaks down. We discuss where to pull over, whom to call, and what to check once in a safe location. Students learn how to change a tire and develop problem-solving skills for emergencies.

Why We Started the Vehicle Essentials Workshop

The reason we decided to start our Vehicle Essentials Workshop is simple: we wanted to empower our students. Understanding what a car is doing and why it does it is vital. For instance, a manual transmission operates differently than an automatic one. By grasping the components of a manual transmission, students gain insight into their driving experience.

We also cover basic car mechanics to ensure our students understand how a car runs. Knowing the components, their jobs, and how they work together is key to efficient vehicle operation. This understanding leads directly into our maintenance workshop, where students learn to care for these components. Neglecting them can shorten a vehicle's lifespan.

Lastly, our roadside safety portion equips students with the knowledge to handle emergencies. They learn how to change a tire, what to do if they run out of gas, and how to check their battery and oil. In the worst-case scenario, we prepare them for interactions with law enforcement. What documents to have, how to behave when talking to an officer, and what to do in a minor accident are all covered.

Without realizing it, society is becoming accustomed to automation. We've placed so much trust in technology that we often neglect to understand how things work. This creates a gap between our daily use of vehicles and our knowledge about them. ShiftPoint aims to bridge this gap.

We all need to learn how to drive, and we rely on motor vehicle transportation every day. Yet, many have become distant from understanding what their vehicles do. If we can shift our learning approach and focus on what truly matters, we can become safer, more knowledgeable drivers. We can evolve into smarter, independent car owners.
